Pumping — a journey that’s both a labor of love and an emotional rollercoaster. As a new parent navigating the realms of breastfeeding and expressing milk, I’ve come to realize that the phrase “don’t cry over spilt milk” takes on a whole new meaning.

The time invested in pumping is a journey in itself. It’s not just the physical act; it’s the added hours to my already bustling schedule. Strapped to a machine, whether at home or on-the-go, pumping requires a level of preparation and dedication that can be emotionally draining. Pumping away from home intensifies the experience. From carrying the equipment to finding a private spot, it’s a challenging feat. It’s not just about producing milk; it’s about finding solace in unexpected corners while expressing this liquid gold.

The emotional weight of accidentally spilling that hard-earned milk is profound. I remember the heart-wrenching moment when my first pump ended up on my lap, a flood of emotions crashing down. Each drop felt like a testament to my dedication, disappearing in an instant.

Moreover, there’s the struggle of seeing some of the pumped milk going to waste when the baby doesn’t finish a bottle. It’s a mix of frustration and sadness, knowing the effort that went into every ounce. But amidst this trial lies a silver lining — the resilience and healing properties of breastmilk. Learning that I could freeze breastmilk the baby had used opened new doors. It transformed from nourishment to a multi-purpose elixir, perfect for milk baths or healing cuts and diaper rashes. It’s a reminder of the incredible properties that this liquid carries.

I also want to acknowledge that not everyone can produce milk. The stigmas surrounding nursing versus formula feeding often overshadow the emotional challenges faced by all parents, regardless of their experience — whether that be by choice or due to biological factors.

So here’s to all parents — whether through nursing, pumping, formula feeding, or a combination thereof. Let’s recognize the emotional weight carried in every drop and embrace the journey, spilt milk and all.

With love,
